The next time you say or feel like you can’t do something, STOP, pause, take a deep breath and remember who you are in Christ. He will never assign you a task that HE is not able to have you perform. “I AM” is all we need in every life circumstance; it is foolish for us to argue, “I am not”.
Moses had a list of excuses he presented to the Lord when God ordered him to lead and speak for the nation of Israel and Pharoah. Let’s look at Exodus 4:10-17 to see how Moses responds to the call of God. This will show what not to do and what to do. Amen!.
The Lord assigned Moses to the task of speaking to Pharoah to save His people. God even showed Moses great miracles and signs he would do, yet Moses continues to give excuses. If God could turn a staff into a serpent, turn the Red Sea to dry land, and cure leprosy (all of which Moses had seen), then is He not able to use Moses to speak His Words with power and boldness? Here is a list of Moses’s excuses and you can probably find more that you may identify with.
- He questioned his own identity, Ex.3:11
- He questions his: suitability, credibility, and acceptability. 4:13
- He lacked the eloquence of a leader.4:10
- And finally, Moses reveals the real reason behind his reluctance, “send someone else”.
- Moses simply did not want to do it.
Moses (like us) makes the mistake of looking at himself instead of looking to God. The God who has made us can use the gifts and abilities He has given us to accomplish the tasks He has assigned.
God begins to get angry with Moses’s excuses. Moses presents himself as a worthless failure, yet 40 years earlier he had faced the enemy on behalf of his people. So we have to stop and ask, was Moses showing a spirit of pride or true humility? Humility isn’t thinking poorly of ourselves, it’s simply not thinking of ourselves at all. It’s about thinking of God’s will and God’s glory, not our own inadequacies, success, or failure. Moses clothed his pride and unbelief in a hollow confession of weakness. He was refusing to trust and obey God.
What about us? How often do we say no to His call, in exercising our spiritual gifts or stepping out on faith? Moses calls him “Lord” and yet refuses to obey His orders. Most of us understand the attitude because we’ve made the same mistake. We regularly resist, ignore, or deflect God’s commandments, just as Moses did. We need to remember that if God is not Lord of all, He isn’t Lord at all.
God knows us more than we do, so we must trust Him and obey what He tells us to do. The will of God will never lead us where the power of God can’t enable us, so walk by faith in His promises. Subsequentially, we see, that Moses was very capable of speaking God’s Word with mighty power to his people and the king of Egypt. He did give eloquent speeches. As the scripture states, “I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me”. Philippians 4:13
Let’s stop making excuses and respond to the call of God regarding all He asks of us. Don’t allow fear and unbelief to deny us the opportunity to do good and be used by God. He blessed us with abilities, talents, and gifts to encourage and build up His church. Our hope is an inner sense of joyful assurance and confidence we trust God’s promises and face the future with His help. Open our hearts, remove the fears, stop being lazy, or whatever your excuse is, surrender it to the Father. He’s got you.
One person, trusting and obeying His will, can change a situation from defeat to victory.
