Why do we need to have quiet time? What do you do during quiet time?
You should prepare a quiet place to meet with God on a regular basis. Prayer and bible study are the focal point of quiet time. In reading the bible, you hear what God has to say to you. Then you can pray back to Him what you have studied in His Word. It requires slowing down, relaxing your mind, and opening your spiritual eyes and ears. It is not a technique that you just go through the motions. It is a time of intimacy between you and God. Ask God to guide you as you read. Write down what He speaks to you. Write down your concerns and give it over to Him so that it is not a distraction during your quiet time. Being quiet is a key to knowing God. You can’t hear God unless you’re quiet. It is a time when you stop running your life, humble yourself and listen. It should be a time when you can sit back and enjoy being in His presence.
Next is reading and studying. Ask God to lead you in what to read. He will take you where you need to be. Observe what you’re reading, look closely at details; who the writer is, who he is speaking to, and the history and background. Take notes. Go over it again until you understand the meaning.
Next you must meditate upon what you studied, what God spoke to you, and how to apply it to your life. When you meditate, you focus on God and his Word. You delight in it. When He tells you something while you’re reading, stop and listen. Let it sink in. Ponder on spiritual things. Reflect on how you’re living. Respond from your heart. Meditating is sitting down with the Father, letting Him speak and really listening.
The last thing you do is pray. Having spent this quiet time you’re able to pray with wisdom and power. Prayer comes from the heart shaped by the scriptures.
Quiet time grows your spiritual life: It helps you turn from evil to good. It develops godly contentment with what you have. It shows you how to live with a new godly lifestyle. It teaches you how to serve others in humility, with love; choose to do good to all people. All of this is transformation by the Spirit of God. It grows you in wisdom and understanding resulting in being more like Him. Finally, you gain insight and understanding into who God is and His will for your life.
Quiet time builds your relationship with God. It is a lifelong adventure of reclaiming what God intended for us from the beginning. It is just absolutely beautiful!
